VirtualR has learned from several independent industry sources that Ignite Game Technologies’ free to play Simraceway title is on the brink of collapse.
According to matching reports from various sources, most of the core team behind Simraceway has recently been let go, including all content artists and other key personal.
As of now, the service is supposedly soldering along with a skeleton crew of only a handful of employees. Simraceway’s free to play title was launched in December 2011, expanding in content ever since.
The free to play title is Ignite Game Technologies’??second try to establish themselves in the sim racing community, the original Simraceway website was a spinoff of rFactorCentral, offering paid online races that were partly conducted with community mods, leading to a rather large controversy in the community.
Aside from having several high-profile licenses such as the whole Mclaren catalogue and promotional help from various real race drivers, SRW is somewhat infamous for their unconventional content prices as several add-on cars sold for as much as $38 for a single car – A concept that seems to have been rejected by the market.
The news of the title’s possible demise is not just bad news for sim racing as a whole but specifically for SimRaceWay’s customers who have poured a lot of money into their content and may end up not being able to use it much longer. Since SRW is an online-based service, customers won’t be able to use the title anymore in case that all servers are being shut down permanently.
