F1 2011 – Paul Jeal On AI Driver Improvements

Codematers’ Paul Jeal has recently been interviewed with The Average Gamer and the F1 2011 Senior Producer shed some light of the improvements in the upcoming title.

Among other details such as the usage of KERS and DRS in F1 2011, Jeal commented on improvements made to the AI system, one of the issues main issues the title’s predecessor had.

Yeah. Last year we took the AI behaviours from DIRT and from GRID. In slower series it works pretty well because the drivers are just making a key decision at any point in time. In F1 it doesn???t work as there is so much going on around you and because you are going so fast and things change so often. Now we???ve almost got an AI driver with 6 brains. One???s just looking at deploying KERS or DRS, the other one is thinking about overtaking, one about slipstreaming and one???s thinking about blocking the guy behind. All of that ties into so the driver knows where the best place is to position his car on the track.

We had driver personalities last year but we???ve moved on so drivers like Hamilton and Alonso look for smaller gaps on the track, smaller little spots, so you can really begin to notice them. In the latest build at the moment, it???s still the early stages, so they are all really, really fast and they are all super aggressive. They are always looking to deploy their KERS and to get through but we can refine that back now.

The full article also includes info on the revised penalty system and Jeal’s F1 history, make sure to??check it out here.

F1 2011 will be released for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on September 23, right in time for the final races of the real life 2011 Formula One World Championship season. The new title will come with improved graphics & handling, new features such as safety car and multiplayer splitscreen as well as a much more extensive career mode.
