Today’s Le Mans 24 Hours race will be remembered as a tragic one as Danish race car driver Allan Simonsen was killed in an accident just minutes into the race.
Simonsen’s GTE-class Aston Martin Vantage crashed hard into the barriers at the exit of Tertre Rouge. Despite reports of being alert and awake at the arrival of the safety crews, Simonsen’s injuries proved fatal at the trackside medical center shortly after.
Aston Martin Racing continues their efforts in the race in honor of Allan at the request of his family.
Aside from seven Le Mans starts, Simonsen was an accomplished driver both in GTs as well as in the Australian V8 Supercar series.
